School Procedures

Visiting the School

When entering the school during the school day, visitors are required to first check in at the office. Visitors will...

  1. sign the visitor notebook and give the reason for the visit.

  2. be given a nametag to wear during their visit.

  3. sign out in the office and return their nametag upon leaving the building.

Eating Lunch with Your Child

You are welcome to eat lunch with your child at school!

However, we ask that you please schedule your lunch visit in the office at least ONE (1) day in advance so that we have enough food to feed everyone.

Student Absences

Please call the school on the morning that your child is out. If we do not hear from you, we will call your home to check on your child.

Homework Policy

Missing Work

Students will have one week to complete missing assignments.  Students will lose 20 points for a missing assignment.  If a student has not turned an assignment one week after the due date, then teachers do not have to accept the assignment.  Students may receive a zero.  Students are responsible for collecting make up!

Absences and Excuses

  • After missing school, students should bring a note from a parent or legal guardian to the principal outlining the reason for the absence(s). The principal will determine if the absence is excused or unexcused.

  • Unexcused absences: There will we no opportunity to make up work for credit.

  • Excused absences: Make-up opportunities are as follows...

    1. Make-up work is to be assigned AFTER a student returns from being absent.

    2. Any homework or test assigned prior to an absence will be due the day the student returns to school.

    3. For homework or tests assigned during the student's absence, all make-up work must be completed and turned in by the same number of days of the absence, plus one day.

    4. Any homework or test not made up during the specified time will result in a zero.

    5. It is the student's responsibility to arrange for make-up work or tests.

    • Exceptions to these rules due to long-term medical circumstances may be determined by the principal.

Progress Reports/Report Cards

  • Progress Reports are sent home by every teacher every 3 weeks (between report cards).  Every teacher will send home Progress Reports on the same day.

  • Report Cards are sent home on the Thursday after each six week period ends. (See the School Calendar for those dates.)

Detention Procedures

Detention hall meets on Tuesdays from 3:05 - 4:30 p.m. during the school year, unless school is dismissed early on a Tuesday.

Parents will be notified of the detention by the teacher through the recording of the offense in the student's planner. The parent will sign their name next to the detention notice. Should the student fail to get the parent to sign the planner, the teacher will notify the parent by phone or email.

At the beginning of detention, students present are identified and their presence recorded in the detention notebook.

Please see the planner for the complete detention policy.

Scheduling an Appointment with a Teacher

Appointments are scheduled during the teacher's planning period.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Call ahead and tell Natalie Boyd, School Secretary, that you would like to set up a meeting with the teacher.

  2. Natalie will check the teacher's planning time, and schedule your meeting during that time. She will record you phone number in case that particular day and time will not work for the teacher (due to a scheduled absence or other scheduled activity during that time).

  3. Natalie will send a note to the teacher alerting them of the scheduled meeting.

  4. If there is a conflict, Natalie will call the parent to reschedule the meeting during the same planning time on another day.

  5. If a parent wishes to meet with a group of teachers, a few days notice is appreciated.

Lost and Found

The lost and found is located in the library. Any student who has lost an item needs to check with Ms. Shannon O'Neal to see if it has been turned in to the lost and found.

Drop Off/Pick Up Procedure

It is important that we all do our part to ensure students remain safe when leaving school at the end of the day. If the proper procedures are followed by everyone, then this process will provide safety to our students in the quickest, most efficient method possible.

The pick up and drop off procedure are detailed: here

  1. ALL students will be picked up from the side entrance of the school building.

  2. Two lanes of traffic will be used to pick up students.

  3. Parents in Lane 1 will pull around to the side entrance, pick up/drop off, and immediately exit to their left.

  4. Parents in Lane 2 will pull around to the side entrance, pick up/drop off, continue forward down the alley, and then make a left turn to exit.

  5. Students are to remain at the side entrance and wait to be picked up.

  6. No one shall be in the circle during "Busses Only" hours.

  7. NOTICE: There shall only be ONE entrance during pick up/drop off times.

  8. There will be no left turns made at the stop sign. Please drive straight or make a right turn out of the school drive.

  9. Teachers will not park in the first row of parking spaces to allow for parents to drive through more easily.

  10. Special pick up/drop off requests can be made at front office or with the School Resource Officer.

It is my honor to serve Martin Middle School as the School Resource Officer. It is imperative, however, that we all do our part to make the pick up/drop off procedure safe and fair for every parent and student. Please do your part.

To contact Jimmy Brown, School Resource Officer, call the school or send an email to Email Jimmy Brown.

Bus Permission Slips may be found and printed off below.  If you have any questions about the permission slip-please call the school.

Checking a Student Out of School

When checking out a student from school, anyone, even parents and legal guardians MUST show proper identification, such as a Driver's License.

When checking out a student from school, anyone other than a parent or legal guardian MUST have the following:

  1. A written note from parent/legal guardian stating that this person has permission to leave school with their child.

  2. Proper identification, such as a Driver's License.

Dismissing School for Snow or Other Inclement Weather Conditions

Please listen to the following radio and television stations for school closings and dismissals. They will be contacted as soon as a decision can be made in the early morning or during the day.

  • WCMT Radio, Martin 101.7 FM & 1410 AM

  • WCDZ Radio, Martin 95.1 FM

  • WWEZ Radio, Trenton 97.7 FM

  • WWYN Radio, Jackson 106.9 FM

  • WBBJ TV, Channel 7 (Jackson)

  • WPSD TV, Channel 6 (Paducah)

We sincerely thank you in advance for your cooperation in listening to the radio and/or television stations rather than calling the schools and/or personnel. This is always a difficult decision and we do not need the telephone lines tied up.

It is not our desire to dismiss school prior to regular closing time. However, in some instances, it may be necessary. Parents, please make provisions for your child if this should occur and please share this information with your child's teacher if it is different from the daily departure routine.

Please know that we always desire to make the best decision for our students' safety.

Favorite Shirt Friday

As an incentive, students with perfect attendance during the week will be allowed to wear their favorite shirt on Fridays.  Perfect attendance means your child can't have any absences, tardies, or early checkouts for the week.  Eligible students can wear a shirt of their choosing on Fridays. It can be a t-shirt or other patterned shirt, but it must be school appropriate.  The shirt is to be tucked in with a belt, and all other dress code requirements are to be followed.
